We offer the latest in advanced vision services for Cataract surgery at our own in-office Surgery Center.

4worldlovers: Our new workflows ensure the safety of patients and staff, triage patients, and provide in clinic care as necessary.

Clinic Hours: 8AM – 12PM, 1PM – 5PM Monday thru Friday. These slots are reserved for established patients requiring medications, lasers, drops, injections, or monitoring for vision threatening diseases.

Telehealth (i.e. video-chat) consultations: 1PM – 5PM Monday. This serves to triage and prevent unnecessary clinic visits for new patients, new complaints, or patients who have been at risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2. Patients can call us to inquire and arrange appointments.

Raised in Kaneohe, Dr. Chang attended UC Berkeley for college and returned to the University of Hawaii for medical school. After his residency at Loma Linda University’s School of Medicine, he went to Harvard for his fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology. He stayed on faculty at Harvard Medical School for seven years teaching microsurgery techniques, and authored several publications. A dedicated learner, he studied public health at Johns Hopkins and healthcare finance at Wharton.

Jon M. Portis, MD specializes in state-of-the-art customized laser cataract surgery, as well as LASIK. For cataract surgery, using wavefront technology, he selects the specific intraocular lens best suited for the patient’s eye and to achieve the desired visual result as well as the sharpest possible vision. He then utilizes the LenSx femtosecond laser to perform the cataract removal with the greatest precision possible.


Dr. Portis obtained his undergraduate degree at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) graduating with honors in chemistry. He then went on to earn his Doctorate of Medicine from Harvard Medical School. After completing an internship at Queen’s Medical Center, he completed his ophthalmology training at Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and has been in practice in Honolulu since 1985.

Dr. Portis was one of the earliest surgeons in Hawaii to perform laser vision correction surgery (LASIK), as well as the first to implant a multifocal intraocular lens at the time of cataract surgery. Dr. Susie Chang earned her Bachelors of Science at Brown University and her Doctorate of Medicine from Ohio State University. She completed her residency in Ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and her fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where she also received the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship Award. Prior to joining HPH, she served as Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology and Vitreoretinal Fellowship Director at Ohio State. She has participated as co-investigator of several national clinical research trials for the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and macular edema, and has authored a number of peer-reviewed publications. Her goal is to educate patients and their families and provide compassionate care tailored to each patient’s needs.

Dr Chang is very intelligent and focused. I just didn't know what to ask . I'm glad she knows what's going on with me and she gave me assurance that so far, my eyes are okay.
